Simplifying a Complex Configurator for Mobile

A well-built configuration tool wasn’t converting the way it should. Fixing it meant designing for the phone it was actually being used on.

The configurator was built on a sound idea, but it wasn’t converting the way the client had hoped. The best moment to imagine a new pontoon is out on the lake, and most people aren’t bringing their computer for a day on the water. Customers discovered and configured on their phones, then moved to desktop to buy, where they felt more comfortable reviewing every item and spec. But they’d never get there if the mobile path was blocked, and the tool hadn’t been designed with that in mind: microscopic text and tiny touch targets that fell short of accessibility standards, a real problem for a target market that skews older.

I rebuilt the core flow around mobile instead of treating it as a breakpoint, with readable type and touch targets sized for the people actually using it. Just as important was earning the client’s confidence in a second round of investment, by being clear about what would be different this time. The rebuilt tool became something the retailer could confidently point customers toward.
